Last weekend I visited the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River, Minnesota. I relish the occasional road trip to the country and the farm did not disappoint! It’s a 19th century teaching farm where staff members are dressed in period costume tending the fields and animals and cooking farm fresh foods in the 1860s era kitchen. We were encouraged to wander the farm, pet animals, pump water from the well, make pies, eat pies, and generally explore every nook and cranny of the place, so we did! The staff is very friendly, each offering insight into farm life during this period. It’s a hands on, immersive experience very well suited to a family outing. The Minnesota Historical Society does great work in making history come alive and the Oliver Kelley Farm is no exception. I really enjoyed my visit. Huge thanks to the Minnesota Historical Society for the hospitality!
